Fall 2011 Career Fair

The largest career event at McMaster University, Fall Career Fair 2011 offers a forum for you to meet face-to-face with employers and make career connections.  Speak with recruiters interested in hiring McMaster University graduates on Thursday, September 22, 2011 in the David Braley Athletic Centre from 10am-3pm. It's all happening in one place - onsite resume reviews, networking, employment opportunities, career exploration and more! Don't miss this opportunity to connect with over 75 organizations.

Career Fair Networking Reception

If you want to get to know more about a particular company, ask detailed questions, find out about positions available, learn about the application process and ultimately build new contacts with employers there is no better place to do so than at the Career Fair Networking Reception!  Following the 2011 Career Fair, graduating year students can purchase tickets for only $10.00 and have one-on-one time with recruiters from major companies across Canada.  Tickets can be purchased in Gilmour Hall 110 (Student Success Centre) starting on September 12. Please Note: A limited number of tickets will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Social Media + Job Search Conference

November 10-11, 2011, McMaster Innovation Park

The Social Media + Job Search Conference will connect final year students seeking full-time career opportunities with social media experts so they can learn how to effectively use the most popular social media platforms for employment gains.

Learn how you can leverage social media in order to build your personal and professional brand, demonstrate advocacy, attract recruiter attention, share opinions and brainstorm best practices related to your online profiles and, in doing so, connect with others who can influence your employability.

Registration is limited to 125 final year students – you must register on OSCARplus and pay the $10 conference registration fee (cash only) at the Student Success Centre, Gilmour Hall 110 in order to secure your spot.  Registration opens: Monday, October 3rd at 9am.

Community Engagement and Volunteer Fair

The Community Engagement and Volunteer Fair is offered annually by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Experiential Education in partnership with Volunteer Hamilton and the Student Success Centre. At the fair, community agencies showcase their organizations and highlight opportunities for students who are interested in gaining volunteer experience.

The Fair will be taking place on Tuesday, September 20 and Wednesday, September 21 (in partnership with McMaster United Way) in the McMaster University Student Centre from 10:30am-1:30pm. Attend this event and be exposed to the numerous opportunities and volunteer agencies within the City of Hamilton and surrounding areas.

Career Exploration Month

Career Exploration Month is series of events and speakers scheduled throughout October 2011.   Employers, career mentors and community representatives will represent the private, public and not-for-profit sectors to ensure a breadth of opportunity, information and exposure for students attending the events. 

Through attending these events and connecting with various organizations and professionals, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Expand your knowledge and understanding of what careers are available
  • Be inspired to discover the various ways you can gain experience to prepare for future careers
  • Discover the  importance of gaining experience and exploring options to reach end career goals
  • Have access to paid jobs, volunteer placements and networking opportunities
  • Determine which careers may be a ‘good fit’

Workshops

Career Planning Group

This is not your high school career test! The Career Planning Group will take you through an assessment of your interests, personality, skills and values by using the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator), Strong Interest Inventory, as well as card sorts and surveys such as Skill Scan and Career Values Survey.

The full day workshop will help give you:

  • An understanding of yourself in the areas of interests, values, skills and personal strengths
  • A broader understanding of careers that might be a good fit for you
  • More confidence in what your next steps should be
  • An understanding of the resources and services available to help you take the next steps


It is recommended to meet with a Career Counsellor one or two weeks after the workshop to help you get full value from the workshop.

To register for the workshop, please drop by Gilmour Hall 110 a minimum of 4 days prior to the session. There is a $25 fee (cash only) and payment is required at time of registration. You will need to complete the on-line assessments prior to the workshop which will be sent to you by email.

Networking Breakfasts

Events such as our annual Networking Breakfasts are a great opportunity for you to network with career professionals and receive first0hand information about career information, trends in the industry as well as employment opportunities. Students who attend the Networking Breakfasts have the opportunity to spend time with each professional in attendance and gather information, ask questions and gain “real world” knowledge about various career paths within a particular industry or sector. These events are industry or sector specific and are offered during the academic term.

Spring/Summer Employment Fair

The Who's Hiring Spring/Summer Employment Fair, will be taking place on Tuesday, January 24 in the MUSC Marketplace between 10:30am-2:30pm.

Meet with employers looking to hire for summer, full-time, part-time, internship and volunteer positions.

Leading up to the Fair, you will be able to participate in a comprehensive program of activities that will help you prepare for your full-time or summer job search. Activities include: networking opportunities with employers, job search workshops,resume reviews, special presentations and interview practice opportunities.
