Post-Graduate Certificates & Diploma Programs

Post-Graduate Certificate programs are offered at Colleges or Continuing Education Centres of Universities. The programs are “career focused” and provide specific training in a particular field. Some are offered as full-time programs with a practicum to gain industry experience and others are offered part-time. They are called “post-graduate” because they are designed for people who already have university degrees. Visit Ontario Colleges.ca to research your options.

Diploma programs are offered through Colleges and range from 1 -3 years in length. Many offer co-op options to provide field experience. For some careers, the college program is the requirement to enter the field (ex. Paramedic, Child Youth Worker, Dental Hygienist etc.).

Undergraduate Degrees

There is also the option of completing a second degree. Depending on the program, the courses from your first degree may be counted towards your second degree. Some programs offer accelerated programs if you already have previous undergraduate training (ex. Nursing, Social Work).

Certificates

Many Professional Associations offer certification within an occupation. Courses are offered through Associations, Colleges or Continuing Education Centres. Working towards “certification” may be required for some career areas or it may help you gain more knowledge in the field, making you more competitive. Check with the professional association (national, provincial or international) of the career area you are interested in to explore further.
