Orientation

Orientation programs create opportunities for incoming students to become engaged in their university experience. The programs promote learning and development and lead to a successful integration into the McMaster community. Visit our Videos section where you can learn more about McMaster as well as how to transition from high school to university. Check out details on this year's Summer Orientation Program. If you would like to visit McMaster's campus, consider taking a tour.

Get involved, get prepared, and get ready for University life!

The activities and events planned throughout orientation will help you in dealing with the typical changes and transitions experienced by students within their first year of university.

Some typical changes and transitions include:

  • Development of new friends and support networks
  • Loss of high school friends and familiar support systems
  • New campus and community to learn and navigate - First Year Experience @ McMaster University Library
  • New living environments and learning to live independently or with roommates
  • Independent decision-making (management and prioritization of time, seeking out information and good decision-making)
  • Changing academic expectations and teaching styles ranging from small to large group formats
  • Progressive learning styles and academic skills
  • Learning about university procedures, culture, and expectations for the first time as a First Generation Student

This can be both an exciting and nerve-racking time for you as an incoming student.  Students who have participated in Orientation programs generally feel better prepared to deal with the changes associated with entering first year.

  • If you are a student whose parents did not attend post-secondary education (college or university) then you are considered a First Generation student and you are eligible to receive a First Gen financial bursary!
